The Penn State Alumni Association

What’s been happening:

My favorite memories pertinent to Penn State are several. I was the first graduate of Brooklyn Prep. to coach a National Championship Team for a Pennsylvania school ! So, JoPa is the second Brooklyn Prepster to coach a National Champion for Pennsylvania! In 1977, a National Appellate Court team representing The Dickinson School of Law (DSL) won among 160 plus law schools then annually participating in the competition sponsored by The Association of the Bar of The City of NY. Team member Peggy Greenfield, DSL '78, also sprung from Brooklyn, was Best Advocate! Of course, I agree that Paterno-coached teams should have been recognized as Champions before 1977. Another great memory is my wife Joan Dawley Maher receiving her JD degree from DSL in 1980. She was the first, perhaps only, DSL "faculty wife" to be banned by a teacher-spouse from his classes at DSL! DSL lacked a rule against nepotism! Later, great pleasure was implicit in then DSL Dean Michael Navin's appointment of Joan as adjunct assistant professor of Securities Law. Added Nittany pride are implicit in Penn State's 1998 conferral of its honorary LL.D by reference, in the accompanying citation, to various services including my DSL Deanship; my designation, upon retirement, as emeritus Dean & Professor; and Joan's election to the DSL Board of Governors.
